Earthquake Claims

The information in this section has been written to assist you to understand the earthquake claims process. Please note that as part of managing your claim for earthquake damage, you are likely to deal with the following:

Earthquake Commission (EQC) - The Earthquake Commission (EQC) is New Zealand's primary insurer of natural disasters (including earthquakes), providing what is called 'EQCover'. Most residential damage caused by the earthquakes is covered by EQC through the EQC levy you pay as part of your house and/or contents insurance premiums. EQC covers up to a maximum of $100,000 + GST ($115,000) per earthquake under your House policy, and up to a maximum of $20,000 + GST ($23,000) per earthquake event under your Contents policy. Contact EQC for any questions about claims being managed by EQC on 0800 DAMAGE (0800 326 243).

Southern Response Earthquake Services Ltd - Southern Response is the government-owned company responsible for settling claims by AMI policyholders for Canterbury earthquake damage which occurred before 5 April 2012 (the date AMI was sold to IAG). For customers who have lodged a claim where the damage either exceeds EQCover ('over cap') and / or damage is for items covered by their AMI policy but not covered by EQC ('out of scope'), and the damage was sustained prior to 5 April 2012, Southern Response will manage your claim. For any questions about claims being managed by Southern Response, phone 0800 501 525.
